Going down from the northern highlands towards the Amazon, you will find the pleasant village of Chachapoyas on the way. Regional capital of the Amazonas, its well-preserved colonial architecture, its relaxed atmosphere, far from the tourist crowds, the small warm squares and flowered patios make this city a relaxing and refreshing stopover on the way to discover northern Peru, between mountains (Chiclayo can be reached by the sierra) and jungle. The Chachapoyas region is also rich in history: the pre-Inca civilization of the same name has left many sites there, buried in the thick jungle. Many hikes and tours are possible from the city centre, in order to discover these treasures of history and nature in the surrounding area.
